Director of Engineering, Observability

The Observability Platform team is at the heart of this mission, providing tools and insights that empower thousands of engineers to build and operate resilient, high-performing services. We are looking for an exceptional Director of Engineering to lead this team, shaping the future of how Expedia Group understands and operates its complex, multi-cloud ecosystem and drives the company's reliability and operational excellence goals.
In this role, you will:
Lead the vision and strategic roadmap for Expedia Group's Observability platform, driving innovation in reliability and operational excellence
Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing team of managers and engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
Architect and oversee the development of scalable, multi-cloud observability solutions, integrating enterprise tools like Datadog and Splunk with open-source technologies like Grafana, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry
Partner with engineering leaders, product, and program management across the organization to drive the adoption of observability best practices and align the platform roadmap with business needs
Drive the optimization of the platform for cost-effectiveness, performance, and resiliency, developing automation for deployment, event correlation, and incident remediation
Own the operation of the observability platform, ensuring it meets the high standards required for Tier-1 systems that support the entire Expedia Group portfolio
Communicate the value and impact of observability initiatives to senior leadership, influencing technical direction across the company
Experience and Qualifications:
You have 12+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5+ years in a senior leadership role managing managers and engineering teams
You possess deep expertise in observability principles (logs, metrics, traces) and technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or OpenTelemetry
You have demonstrated experience with large-scale, distributed systems and cloud-native architectures (Kubernetes, microservices) on major cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP
You are a people leader who excels at building and mentoring high-performing teams, fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence
You are a skilled communicator and influencer, able to articulate complex technical concepts and their business value to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience

The total cash range for this position in San Jose is $242,000.00 to $338,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $387,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
